Originally a lawyer by profession, I didn't set out for a career in fashion design. However, my love for it and the innate creativity within me led me to this unexpected but fulfilling journey. Drawing inspiration from various sources, such as the intricate patterns of corals, the elegant curves of seashells, and even the captivating allure of amorphous shapes, I found myself immersed in the world of fashion. Recognizing the powerful role clothing plays in expression and change, I merged my legal background with my passion for design and created BAOBAB. Our brand is dedicated to restoration and a sustainable cycle, transforming textile materials into iconic pieces while restoring coral reef ecosystems.
As a female designer, one advantage is our unique ability to draw inspiration from our experiences and challenges, creating designs infused with empathy and sensitivity. However, challenges such as gender biases and unequal opportunities persist in the industry. Overcoming these obstacles requires resilience and a strong support network.
My advice to young female designers is to embrace their unique perspectives and never underestimate the power of their voices. Stay true to your values, continuously educate yourselves on sustainable practices, and seek mentorship from those who share your passion for positive change. Never stop learning; read, look at references, and believe in your capabilities to make a difference through your designs.
